WHAT IS NEGOTIATION ?
Negotiation is nothing but means of getting what you want from others. It is a back and forth communication with the aim to reach an agreement when both the parties have some interest that are shared and others that are opposed. Thus negotiation is nothing but the communication to persuade.
Basic requirements of negotiation:
- There have to be two or more opposite parties, both with an interest in the same objective
- The object can be something tangible like sale of a property or something intangible like a business deal
- The process of negotiation involves both parties sitting down to discuss and thrash out the issues and reach the final settlement
- Negotiation is succesful if both the parties are satisfied at the end of the discussion and agreement
WHY NEGOTIATION ?
We consider that most of the times the negotiations are for the business purpose only to earn more money or to get more contracts. However, the negotiations also can be for any of the following reasons:
- A formal apology
- To prove a point of principal
- To ensure a sort of thing never happens again
- To satisfy the ego of the concerned party
- To preserve the relationship with the other person in dispute
- To settle the dispute at the earlier so that the life can go back to normal
Most of the times, it happens that even when the negotiation starts, the concerned person is not aware what exactly he wants out of the negotiation. This clarity is given by the professional negotiators, who guide them to decide the priories at the time of negotiation. Thus, the negotiators are introduced at the time of negotiations for any of the four important reasons:
- To WIN (to beat your counterpart)
- To create value in a deal
- To develop a long standing relationship between the parties
- To get a successful deal at the end
